Additive Friction Stir Deposition

ALICE aims also to evaluate the best AFSD technology for the implementation of a circular solution. Hence a specialised tooling system was developed to implement a novel friction stir extrusion process for additive manufacturing. This tooling system consists of two key components that operate independently to ensure process success.

Multilayer friction surfacing method was studied to select process parameters for the deposition using AA2011 aluminum alloy providing the highest deposition rate, that is thickest layer deposited. It was found out that the combination of high loading force and low rotation speed resulted in higher layer thickness.
